Picture of the month
DENNIS, KATRINA, RITA and WILMA have changed my life. I hope in
some small way I can change yours. Can you imagine a much warmer world
with the water level rising 20" in the next 50 years. Much of the
wonderful wildlife will be harmed and some may disappear.
This site is about the impact of global warming on the
Tropics. When I originally started to work on it, my intent was to just
do a site to display and show some of
the many things I so value about this region, sell some pictures and
donate the proceeds to environmentally concerned organizations.
To that end I have created a Gallery with the images
most suitable for framing and displaying. Profits from sales of
pictures in the Gallery go to environmental groups. In the other
portfolios I have attempted to depict the beauty and wonder of the
tropics.
The hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 have raised grave concern about the
future of some of the most important features of these tropical and sub
tropical regions. I am not a scientist but there is no question in my
mind about global warming. Its causes can be debated but it is real.
Gavin Schmidt - climate scientist - Goddard Institute for Space Studies
says "There are somethings that are absolutly incontravertable ....
greenhouse gases are increasing, they are increasing because of human
activity, that the planat is actually getting warmer and that some part
of that warming is due to greenhouse gases".
Hotter summers, more intense storms, and warmer winters are going to
dramatically effect the way of life in this region eventually. I can
only hope that some of the images will galvanize more peple to become
involved and lend their voice and vote to the cry for change as I am trying to do with this site.
My background as a photographer started with a need for images
for design work I was doing. I have started all this late in life.
After working with furniture design and color for years, I have found
some of those skills transfered easily. It has taken me several years
to learn the intricacies of the digital photography world. I think I am
learning and at least have mastered the basics. My images are to
Record and Preserve the Things I love so much about the tropics. I hope
you enjoy them to. These images may be purchased by contacting me at
jficks@bellsouth.net. All profit goes to organization working to
preserve the Everglades and raise the awareness of Global Warming.
